Eagle Mountain Weekly Volleyball
Scot Stacey
While in college up at Utah State University, I was able to participate in something that I've never seen before and never sense. Each week we were able to gather all of my friends and head down to the local park/church lawn and join with about 70 other people and play volleyball just as a pick up game. We would gather on the field and set up the 7-10 nets and then just grab players to play on our team.
The scoring would be regular, although rally scoring is fine too, but as we played, as soon as one of the other teams would win their game then in all of the other games, the team in the lead would move up the field and the team that was trailing would move down. At the bottom, the team would stay there or if there was a team waiting to play, they would come on while the bottom net loser would fall off. We were able to have four per team mostly, but it would depend on how many people showed up.
We would like to get this going again. Every Saturday morning in Eagle Mountain we want to try to get this kind of thing going again. My brothers and I will try and play at the park located here. It's on the corner of Cattle Drive and Park Street in the Ranches of Eagle Mountain. You should be able to find it with the yahoo map.
If anyone has any outdoor nets we would like to use them if we are able to get more people. There is a sand court located here and I have a net. So that would allow for 16 people right there. Also, it would also be fun to continue this when it gets cold, so if anyone has access to an indoor located anywhere in Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Lehi, Bluffdale, or even American Fork that would be great.
The only thing that we request is that people leave there "experienced volleyball player" attitude at the street. The three of us have all played some volleyball with high talented people, and we have seen this mysterious attitude a lot. This includes the cursing that comes along with it. We want this to be fun, and this attitude is what killed the event in Logan. We are all learning to play volleyball. Even Karch Kiraly learns something new every time he plays volleyball. This also means that anyone that comes should be prepared to 'help' less experienced, and to be 'helped' by more experienced players. This will allow for better play in the long run.
So everyone come out and have a good time. Eventually it would be nice to start holding tournaments with prizes!!
